Yakima Announces Bicycle Rack Recall

Two customer complaints led Yakima to discover a serious technical issue with some of its vehicle bike racks. The model in question is the SpareTime two-bike rack manufactured between Nov 2011 and Oct 2012. The model is specifically designed for vehicles that have a spare tire on the back. Yakima has recalled 7,000 of the faulty bike racks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified the problem as weak mounting bolts. The report claimed the mounting bolts sometimes broke under weight, sending bikes crashing onto the road. The dangers caused by the falling bikes are serious, often affecting other drivers on the road.

Faulty bike racks can lead to dangerous accidents. Bikes dropping onto the road can damage your property and the property of others. More seriously, it can cause vehicle accidents that may lead to another party’s injury.
