Ford Recalls Thousands of Escape Hybrid Vehicles

Ford Motor Company recently announced a recall of thousands of Escape hybrid vehicles. The affected Escape Hybrid vehicles were manufactured between 2003 and 2008 and include model year 2005 to 2008 Ford Escape hybrid vehicles.

A certain number of Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles are also affected by the recall.

Here are the specific models and vehicles affected:

-Certain model year 2005 to 2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured between October 13, 2003 and June 20, 2008.

-Certain model year 2006 to 2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured between June 10, 2005 and June 20, 2008.

In both vehicles, the Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail, resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating. Overheating can shut down the powertrain, causing a stall-like condition and increasing the risk of a crash.

This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. If you think you may be affected by this recall, then your personal safety may be in danger.

What to do if you’re affected by the recall:

Ford is currently notifying affected vehicle owners. Owners are encouraged to take their vehicle into a Ford dealership, where the dealer will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) pump with an improved brushless pump. This replacement will be performed free of charge.

The recall announcement was received by the U.S. Department of Transportation on September 3, 2014. The recall began on October 27, 2014.

Owners with further questions about the recall can contact Ford’s customer service hotline at 1-866-436-7332. Reference the recall number 14S19 during the call.

Alternatively, vehicle owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Or, they can go to WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV for more information.
