Santa Barbara Smokehouse Recalls Smoked Salmon Due to Listeria Risk

The Santa Barbara Smokehouse Inc. issued a voluntary recall this week because of a risk of listeria in its smoked salmon products.

The smoked salmon was produced and packaged between December 17th and December 24th 2014 and could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause debilitating illnesses in children, the elderly, or anyone with a weakened immune system.

In healthy individuals, the Listeria monocytogenes organism typically only causes short-term symptoms, including high fever, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, the organism has been shown to cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

All of the following smoked salmon products are being recalled:

To date, there have been no reported illnesses in connection with Santa Barbara Smokehouse Inc. products.

The organism was spotted during routine in-house testing by The Santa Barbara Smokehouse Inc. That testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on surfaces that may have come into contact with some of the smoked salmon.

Production of The Santa Barbara Smokehouse Inc. products has been voluntarily suspended for the time being. The California Department of Public Health is investigating the issue to determine the source of the incident. The Santa Barbara Smokehouse Inc. is fully complying with CDPH during this time.
