General Mills Recalls Cheerios

General Mills RECENTLY ANNOUNCED A RECALL for its Cheerios products. The recall affects an estimated 1.8 million boxes of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios cereals sold across the nation.

The cereals are being recalled due to “an incident that may have added wheat” into products labeled as gluten-free.

In a news release, the Minneapolis-based General Mills claimed that cereals produced at its Lodi, California, facility might trigger allergic reactions or illnesses in people with wheat allergies, gluten intolerance, or celiac disease.

The incident at the Lodi, CA plant affected four days’ worth of original Cheerios production and 13 days of Honey Nut Cheerios production.

Why Are the Cereals Being Recalled?

General Mills explained that an incident caused gluten-free Cheerios products to feature wheat products.

Here’s how the president of General Mills’ cereal business, Jim Murphy, described the incident:

“Our Lodi production facility lost rail service for a time and our gluten-free oat flour was being off-loaded from rail cars to trucks for delivery to our facility on the dates in question. In an isolated incident involving purely human error, wheat flour was inadvertently introduced into our gluten-free oat flour system at Lodi.”

Only two General Mills products were affected by this recall, including:

-Cheerios (original)

-Honey Nut Cheerios

Only cereals produced on the four affected days are subject to this recall. All other General Mills products – including other gluten-free cheerio brands like Apple Cinnamon Cheerios and Frosted Cheerios – are safe to consume and are not affected by this recall.
